The revolutionary teamLabBody-3D Motion Human Anatomy- shows in incredible detail the inside of a human body. Starting in 1998, the researchers based in the Osaka University Orthopaedic Biomaterial Science Laboratory have imaged 827 individual body elements in full 3D using state of the art CT and MRI imaging. With help from Professor Kazuomi Sugamoto, they have developed a new approach to image living human bodies, and record their muscular skeletal movement and range. This movement differs from that of previously living examples, and this pioneering field of research is brought to life through this iPad app.
Capturing the internal motion of a living human — and visualising this in glorious 3D — has resulted in a beautiful and insightful application. Useful for education, analysis, diagnosis and after-care for patients, it is well worth a look if you are a practising medical professional, and is a wonderful curiosity even if you’re not.
If you have a local library, you may well be used to visiting and borrowing books from it. But, did you know that there are many titles available to borrow as digital works? All you need is your library card, and a little app called Overdrive Media Console.
As well as borrowing written works, you can also borrow audiobooks, just as you would in person. The main difference is that with digital borrowing the digital title will check itself back in automatically and there are never any late fees.

ElectricSlide is a really simple concept executed brilliantly. Anyone who has ever had to give a presentation will know how frustrating it is to move files around or to try out connections just to get your hard-crafted work displayed on a screen somewhere. How awesome would it be to simply turn up at a conference or a meeting and just press play on your iPad, and have it all presented perfectly and seamlessly over the resident Internet connection?
This is the promise of ElectricSlide, and it was with great enjoyment that I took this slick app out for a test-run to see what it could do, and if it lived up to the promise. Read on to see what I found.
If you love audiobooks then you’ll have probably come across Audible. Today, we’re looking at the recent addition of an iPad client to their range of listening possibilities. Since Audible is owned by such a large enterprise (it’s an Amazon company) then we should expect a well-presented app of the highest quality that caters for audiobook-loving people everywhere.
In many respects, this is what we get with Audible for the iPad. It includes bookmark synchronisation across e-books and audio streams and also contains a huge back-catalogue of audiobook titles. The app looks the part and for this review, we’ll take it on the road with some in-depth testing to see if it has substance beneath all that gloss, or if it’s simply all for show (after all, you shouldn’t judge an audiobook by its cover!). CloudOn is a revolutionary way of working with fully-featured applications without having to install anything except for a small viewer app on your iPad. It works by using a virtual working environment — a Workspace — which links to one of several cloud-based storage providers, so none of your personal work is stored anywhere on CloudOn‘s infrastructure. You get to use your favourite cloud storage provider with all of their security protection, backup provision and so on whilst still working with industry-standard Microsoft Office 2010 and Adobe Reader, and all that right on your iPad.
That’s a pretty decent offering for a free application. Let’s take a closer look to see if it’s usable and practical working with this solution on the iPad’s tablet environment.

A notepad test: take a pen and a piece of paper or notepad and write a few words or your name. Easy, isn’t it? Now what about doing that on your iPad, but add the ability to carry with you many pens and paper types, preprepared perfect shapes, highlighter pens and a virtually unlimited reference book that you could cut and paste from (the Internet). Sound a little bit better than the pad and pencil? You’d like to think so.

That’s a very basic photo editing technique known as “color splashing.” Don’t they look great? iTunes Match is an offering from Apple where you pay a fixed fee per year($24.99), and using iTunes, it matches the music you have in your library with its own central store. Once matched, these tracks are then available to listen to on all of your Apple devices, or through iTunes on up to five PCs.
Let me say up front that I love iTunes match now, but it hasn’t been an easy start. Like any worthwhile relationship, there has been some learning to do, adjustments to be made here and there and even some compromises made. And there has certainly been a lot of patience needed. Showboat is an inexpensive scrapbooking app, with some good basic features for throwing together collections of photos quickly. This app will provide a way to showcase your photo collections of app screenshots, real estate summaries, art portfolios, items for sale, etc. It’s an ideal app for when you know you’re Internet access will be absent or patchy.
Although it’s still undergoing development, this is an app to watch. Lets take a look at what it offers out of the box right now. (more…)
