Jamie Oliver’s Recipes

You’re halfway through the September challenge of cooking supper at home 5 nights a week. You began the routine of preparing meals at home with The Photo Cookbook-Simple and Delicious, a collection of basic recipes with step-by-step photos to guide you. After building a bit of confidence you branched out with more global flavors in BBC Good Food Quick Recipes. Now you’re ready to unleash your creativity and master a few more cooking skills with Jamie Oliver’s Recipes.

This app is for people who love to cook and eat, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned cook. Jamie’s recipes are bold, flavorful and generous. It’s not just about feeding your family; it’s about providing nourishment. Cooking with Jamie is bold, brash and fun. You’ll enjoy mounding a pile of salad leaves in that big wooden serving bowl you never use. Serving grilled meat and veg on that platter collecting dust in the china cabinet will bring your intention and focus to the table. This app helps to cement the new practice of cooking supper at home as something bigger than a routine — a ritual.

Introducing Jamie Oliver’s Recipes

Here’s how it works: the app is a store where you can purchase recipe bundles. Right now there are 27 recipe bundles (each with 10 recipes), which can be purchased a la carte at $1.99 each. I say it’s worthwhile to buy a subscription. Start with $2.99/month for all the app content to see if you like it, then change to a three or six month subscription to save on the price. It’s important to note that your subscription will automatically renew unless you cancel it.

Launch the app and browse the recipe bundles, which you can subscribe to or purchase individually.

Each recipe bundle has its own theme. Collections like Pimp Your Veggies and Street Food offer playful dishes to keep weeknight meals interesting for you and your kids. Depending on your mood and the weather, you may be attracted to warm and cozy Classic Comfort Food or simple, satisfying Crowd Pleasers. Instead of browsing the recipe bundles, you can filter recipes by dish type or ingredient (meat, fish, soups, pastas, etc.).

Meal Planning

I like to plan my week of dinners by selecting recipes from the bundles, then filling in the holes (need a soup or salad) by using the filters to search for just the right dish to go with the meal. Tap the Like button in a recipe to bookmark it as a meal for the week. Don’t forget to tap the servings button to adjust based on how many people you are cooking for. Some recipes are only meant to feed two, but many quantities can be changed to four or six. Select your serving size before adding the recipe ingredients to your shopping list.

Jamie shares tons of great tips in short video segments, which are peppered throughout the recipes (though you can also find them in the All Videos section). In true “Food Revolution” style, Jamie addresses cooking at home from the ground up. Planning for success begins with being organized, and videos like Getting the Kitchen Ready encourage you to de-clutter the kitchen to make cooking easier and more efficient.

You’ll also find videos demonstrating basic cooking techniques, like carving poultry and cooking eggs. Throughout the videos, Jamie introduces you to simple, inexpensive equipment to make cooking easier and more enjoyable (like how to dry lettuce with a salad spinner in Principles of Super Salads). He even teaches you how to care for your knives, demystifying the whole sharpening technique.

I plan my week’s worth of suppers by liking my chosen dishes so they’re all organized in one place.

Build a relationship with your butcher by learning what to ask for when it comes to high quality, organic/free range meat and poultry.

Tips on buying, storing and cooking meat will make it easier for you to start a conversation with your butcher. Jamie encourages you to cook with cheaper cuts so you can spend your hard earned money on higher quality (organic or free range) meat. Jamie really gives a lot of himself in this app, and having him as your mentor in the kitchen will take your cooking to the next level.

The Recipes

A few of the recipe bundles are especially suited to weeknight cooking, especially 20-Minute Meals Vol. 1-4. These dishes are often clever, never boring. I especially like the Steamed salmon with tomato basil couscous — it’s all tossed into one pot and steamed together! Some of the recipes will introduce you to new techniques, like the Pea & shrimp risotto (yes you can make risotto in 20 minutes!). Each recipe comes with step-by-step photos.

Steaming the salmon in the same pot as the couscous is more efficient than preparing them separately.

If you don’t already have a grill pan, now is the time to get one. It’s great for quick meals and a healthier way of cooking.

Throughout the app, you’ll see recipes for dishes like Grilled Pork chops with broccoli & beans and Italian-style grilled vegetables. Another smart weeknight cooking technique is Tasty Tray-Bakes, recipes that just toss everything into a pan and roast it in the oven. I especially like the look of Jamie’s Sticky chicken with sweet tomatoes & beans — just imagine the chicken roasting in the oven, flavoring the white beans and vegetables!

The app is full of clever techniques for boosting flavor and minimizing workload, like this recipe in Tasty Tray-Bakes.

Crowd Pleasers is a collection of hearty, satisfying dishes that are perfect for refueling your hungry family. Spanish-style chicken with ham and peppers is economical, utilizing cheaper chicken thighs and protein-rich pulses (chickpeas). Don’t let the more involved recipes from Classic Comfort Food daunt you, I would recommend making Toad in the hole with red onion gravy and not bothering with the mashed potatoes. Instead, serve this hearty dish with a simple salad. Feel free to tailor Jamie Oliver’s recipes to fit your lifestyle.

Conclusion

Jamie Oliver’s Recipes is guaranteed to develop your cooking skills and inspire you to try new flavors. This app is the whole package: great recipes, smart tips and solid guidance from a cooking mentor. Just like a kid learning how to ride a bike, you’ll be itching to kick off those training wheels and cook intuitively. Reinforcing the techniques you’ve learned will help you be more independent in the kitchen. New recipe bundles are added to the app periodically, so you’ll continue to be challenged and inspired.

Summary

Jamie Oliver's Recipes is a collection of bold, flavorful dishes and video demos that will expand your palate and your cooking abilities.
