Old Competition Post

A couple of weeks ago I reviewed Basil, a fresh take on recipe apps for the iPad. A fortnight later, I’m still no less enamoured with it!

Basil is a superb recipe app that’s designed with you in mind. The inclusion of smart timers and easy addition of recipes from the web make this a true contender.

If you’re a food lover who likes to try new things, Basil could be the perfect companion!

I would love a code for this app! I have long avoided cooking because I was living in a dorm house with a shared kitchen, but now I have my own rental place, and my own kitchen! I have already started collecting some nice recipes, but with this app I would have them all handy in the kitchen :) . I was also given a slow cooker for my birthday, so I can’t wait to try that one out soon :) . And the timer will be a livesaver of course, because my kitchen is seperate from my living room and I easily get distracted lol.

I successfully had two pots on the stove last week and did not burn down the house. I consider this a major victory and am excited about making more complex recipes.
Perhaps I will even cook three things at the same time without burning them, setting fire to the kitchen, or using modern day smoke signals.

  • http://thesurfernerd.com Thesurfernerd

Well, I just started a cooking course, and I’m learning the basics and some recipes.
I use my iPad to study, if I had basil I could use it to store all my recipes and help me in learning cooking too!

  • Luke

    Thats made me hungry!

  • David

When I was first married I tried to surprise my wife with a little culinary experimentation…I put sour cream in her spaghetti-O’s. Years later it still comes up in casual conversation, I don’t think she’ll ever let me live it down.

  • Daniel Mulligan

Love the clean design! This would be great for my wife when she finds online recipes. She wouldn’t need to search again and again for the same recipes when she wants to make them!

Please pick me and help me be a great husband!

  • @brpumphrey

I would love to stop engaging in the dangerous activity of accessing the cookbooks on top of the cupboards – something always falls – and have a safer option like thousands of recipes on my iPad!

  • Lee

Yum—my wife would love this (and so would I)!

  • Sarab

If I win, I will gift the code to one of my friends who love to cook

  • Toby

I love the simple design of it. I’ve been using pepper plate a lot, and absolutely love it, but I’m ready for a change. The automatic timer features look awesome and I often myself cooking 2-3 recipes at once, so this would be great for me. I follow about 5-6 different cooking sites through RSS feeds, and being able to add those recipes easily sounds awesome! I’ve also felt pepper plate’s tagging is lacking, but not in Basil, it looks awesome.

  • agleung

So many supposed recipe sites. I am getting hungry just looking at the app descriptions. No more excuse to buy fast food.

  • Robert Enriquez

I have been looking at getting this app for some time now. Since I am the one in the kitchen the most out of my family members I can get stuck doing the same old stuff each week and I am sure any help to change that up would be GREATLY appreciated by my family.

  • PhilipK

My wife gave me 100 reasons on the way to the store, why I shouldn’t buy an iPad. The next day she asks me if I’m bringing it to work, because she was hoping she could use it during the day… Ya right!

If I get the coupon code for Basil she will finally get her chance to use it.

  • xbeta

Thanks for the awesome giveaway and chance!

  • Jonathan Clodfelter

I would love a copy of Basil to help me in the kitchen! I really enjoy eating but am not gifted in the cooking department. I would love to have a tool to help me find and follow some new recipes. Thanks!

  • Christian

An iPad with a recipe app is much more convenient than the traditional book – and much more insensitive to the usual kitchen smut.

  • http://learningischange.com Ben Wilkoff

I would say that my forays into the kitchen have been a little underwhelming. I can make Alton Brown’s french toast and some decent Mac and Cheese. I am really looking for a way to try things out without getting into too much trouble. My kids would really like that, as would my wife.

  • Russell

I’ve been experimenting a lot in the kitchen lately, and it looks like Basil would help me put some ‘permanency’ for my recipes. I’d love a copy!

  • http://hazelhaven.com Lindsey

I have started to teach myself how to cook recently and I also started to blog about the experience as well- I use my ipad for recipes and this sounds like it would be a good fit for me!

  • Jonathan

Tis sounds like a wonderful app to me… I volunteer weekly as head chef for a soup kitchen/community food night here in Portland… We use mainly donated food, and don’t really know what we will be getting from one week to the next. Every week is like a mini version of Iron Chef. I have been looking for an app to both store the creations I come up with (so I can remember and recreate them down the road), as well as to store the ones I find along the way… So that I can have a pool of things to pull for when needed.
Thus far I have been using a combination of Pinterest and Evernote… A dedicated app would streamline things, and be a fun addition to my iPad, which is with me in the kitchen as our source of music.
    Thanks for reading!

  • Aniseedvan

It’s green! I like apps with green on!

Also love cooking and bookmark recipes in (also green!) but the formatting often goes awry, this sounds ace!

  • Michael S

I really want a code for this! As far as a funny story goes… Me and my girlfriend were decided to make cake balls one night which involves dipping cake balls we formed earlier in chocolate. This proved much harder than we thought. Being new at this we simply melted the chocolate in the microwave and tried to dip the cake balls in the melty chocolate. The chocolate stayed gooey for like 1 minute before it started to form again so we stuck it back in the microwave. This process continued like 2 more times before the chocolate turned into a coarse powder and was unusable. In the end we went through probably 2 bags of chocolate morsels and had gotten chocolate all over the kitchen including a lamp hanging above the kitchen island. It was a bit of a disaster but we had fun. The cake balls ended up being really good but were pretty damn ugly.

  • Alex

Your review sold me on this app! I cook alone every night while my wife studies for grad school. Please choose me, so I have Basil to keep me company!

  • marc

I’ve been watching this app for a little while. It’s got promise. Thanks for the offer.

  • cards22

I’m a college junior and I have a kitchen for the first time. This app would definitely help me organize some good ideas and keep me away from the EasyMac. Thanks for the giveaway guys!

  • Chris Brinkworth

I found the review of Basil pretty compelling and I’d love a copy, if possible. Several members of my extended family have asked me for an iPad recipe app recommendation recently, but I haven’t found a satisfactory recommendation… potentially until now.
Here’s hoping I get to try it out. Thank you!

  • Layth

I would love to use the ability to clip recipes from my browser, so I never lose them. Also, having all my recipes tagged and formatted in the uniform fashion will really help me get organized and help me be more adventurous in the kitchen! It’s like the best cook book ever, filled with the best recipes ever since I get to decide what’s in it.

  • Lucas

That is a really cool app. Getting it would really help my wife out.

  • George

I would love to replace printouts and my recipe book with a really good iPad app.

  • Rayne Garnsey

Will solve the problem of trying to remember which site the recipe is on that I want to make.

  • Eric

I’d like to compare this to Paprika, which I heavily use now.

  • Archy

I burn my dishes all the time and sometimes I put more salt than needed. Hopefull this app will help me.

  • Dorothy

I would love to have this. I have a weird hobby of watching YouTube videos for recipes so this would be nice.

  • Jonathan

Thanks for the chance to win this.

  • Grace

I’d like to win because ever since my dad has retired he’s been feeling restless. He’s picked up on cooking and we make stuff together sometimes. I’ll probably end up buying the app even if I don’t win. :)

  • Munna

Ha! I’m a nerd, and i can’t cook. Perhaps getting a good recipe app on my ipad that is attached to my hip will get me into the kitchen and start cooking. :)

Thanks for the chance to enter!

  • Nelson

My wife would just love this for all the websites see visits.

  • Mei Ling

Great giveaway. I love to try new recipes.

  • Dean

It would save me time from writing the recipes down.

  • patti

Would love to try to incorporate my iPad with my old-fashioned way of using paper reciped cards.

  • Prudence

It is something I could use right about now.

  • Melvin

I happen to be a food lover that likes to try new things.

  • Hillary

I would like to win this code because I’m a really bad cook and could use all of the help I can get :)

  • Douse

This is one of the few types of apps that I don’t have.

  • Shawn

I need instructions on how to cook.

  • Ermina

Maybe this can show this old dog some new tricks.

  • Diane Close

I’ve been searching for a good recipe app forever! Basil sounds right up my alley, or maybe that should be garden. :) I’d love to win a copy, thanks!

  • Alex Ling

Followed and RT-ed the event as @l1ngchen

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Luke Sherwin

need instructions on how to cook.

  • yoyo

Eating healthily is a key part of getting into shape, so if I having a good recipe manager can really help! ;-)

  • Dora

It is an all in one receipt app. I don’t have to go through several different website to find a good recipe. It is all in there in one snap shot for me to choose the best one I like. It saves me time and I love to cook.

  • Guy Einy

Basil is my favorite herb, and when I heard there was an app named after it, I was certain the App would be fragrant, delicate and awesome like the herb.
From your review it seems like this sure is the case, so I would like to have it!
    Thanks!
