iPads look stunning thanks to their aluminum back and glass façade. Nevertheless, these materials can easily be scratched and dented either after a drop or after a few months of strained usage. Protecting your iPad from these unwanted rubs and itches is important — not only to preserve its original appearance, but also to make it easier to resell in the future.
However, choosing the right cover and case can be overwhelming, given the number of options available on the market. To make it even more complicated, some products only cover part of your iPad, others won’t let you use it while it’s in the case and many aren’t compatible with Apple’s Smart Cover functionality. In order to make this selection process easier for you, we’ve picked an all-in-one case that many consider to be one of the best iPad cases available, and also one of the most affordable on the market: The KHOMO Super Slim Dual.
This review is about the iPad mini case, but KHOMO manufactures iPad versions as well.
When I received my case, I was surprised to see how smartly designed the product was: it covers the iPad in full, yet has the necessary openings for the connectors, buttons, microphone and speakers. The KHOMO case has a built-in smart cover that protects the iPad’s front and can also be folded to serve as a built-in stand.
Placing your iPad in the case is easy, especially because the latter is relatively thin. The fact that the front cover is attached to the case itself, and not to the iPad using magnets, ensures that both the Smart Cover and the case remain attached to the iPad no matter what.
Design & Build Quality
The case is made of two separate parts that remain linked together. The front part is a polyurethane cover with built-in magnets, making it compatible with Apple’s Smart Cover feature. The inner part of the cover has a soft glass cloth-like texture to avoid scratching your screen and to prevent it from being stained. It also acts as a buffer in case external pressure is applied on your screen, when you inadvertently step or sit on your iPad for example. Most importantly, the front cover can be folded and act as a 3-position stand, as demonstrated below.
The outer casing is made out of hard rubberized polycarbonate, which provides high resistance while being relatively thin. The inner part of the back cover feels like — and actually is — hard plastic, while the outside is softer and feels like rigid silicone. This texture provides a better grip and lets you firmly hold your iPad, a great touch when you know how slippery the iPad mini’s back is.
Regarding color choices, fashionistas can pick from a handful of shades: KHOMO offers this product in 15 different colors, ranging from sober and dark ones to bright and bolder tones. Feel free to check their offering on their website: you definitely won’t be disappointed!
The case itself feels solid and strong enough to protect your iPad from small bumps and minor shocks. Because the front cover is attached to the rest of the case and can be folded, my feeling is that this part can be weakened over time and get ruptured, but I strongly feel the case should last at least a year or two. Lastly, because the back of the product is somehow soft, I wouldn’t recommend placing it on rugged surfaces, as these may scratch the case and leave dents on it.
The main purpose of this cover is to protect your iPad and, while the KHOMO Super Slim Dual claims to be very thin, it’s actually thick enough to protect your tablet from most shocks and drops. Nevertheless, because the front part is significantly thinner than the back cover, a serious fall may result in permanent damage to your iPad.
The case remains a great option to protect your iPad mini from most impacts, scratches and dust. However, if you’re the very clumsy type and are likely to drop your iPad off the balcony or in the bathtub, you may want to consider a heavier duty product.
Thanks to its great engineering, you can use your iPad with this case at all times. All ports remain accessible, allowing you to take photos, Facetime and charge your iPad without having to remove the cover. The built-in Smart Cover is also an added value, as it automatically locks/unlocks the screen when you open and close it. Lastly, because the product itself is relatively thin, it doesn’t add a lot of bulk to the iPad, even though some might feel uncomfortable using it with the case on.
Because the KHOMO Super Slim Dual is made out of plastic, cleaning it is a breeze. You can therefore wipe it very carefully using generic computer cleaning products, glass cleaner, rubbing alcohol or water. Unlike leather cases, this cover isn’t very restrictive on the products you can use to clean it: as long as they don’t damage plastic, your cleaning products are safe to use. I’ve even tried washing my case with soap to measure its durability, and have been delighted to see it passed the test!
Although this case is a great product, it does have limitations and isn’t perfect. The first negative point is its weight, which makes the iPad feel heavier when inside the case. The cover itself isn’t particularly heavy, but because the iPad mini is so light, adding to its weight gives a general feel of heaviness.
Also, the Smart Cover’s inner part has a tendency to accumulate dust, which ends up on the screen when you close it. This gives the screen a dirty look and requires you to clean it very often to avoid looking at a dusty display.
Lastly, the opening for the power button requires you to remove the lower part of the iPad first when pulling it out of the case. While this is relatively simple, there is no indication to do so, and repetitively removing the upper part of the iPad first may damage your its power button.
The KHOMO Super Slim Dual case is definitely one of the most convenient and most affordable iPad mini cases I’ve seen. Even though it’s not a military-duty product, it does protect your tablet to a reasonable extent, offers an unslippery grip, a Smart Cover and a built-in stand. Given its very affordable price tag, I can only recommend this cover for your iPad mini.
