Something is in the iOS game development water this week, because so many great games have just been released that it’s hard to decide what to play first.
In this roundup you’ll find a certain sword-wielding master of the universe, some zombies who’ve decided to take over Tinseltown, a group of battle bots on an intergalactic mission, a contract killer named Jack Griffin and a shape-shifting warrior. Come on, let’s take a look.
He-Man and company have been beloved since the 1980s, with a reincarnation taking place pretty much every decade. But whether you love the character from his old-school days or the more modern reboots, this game from Chillingo does a good job of blending the best of both.
While the graphics draw on the old comics for inspiration, they have a decidedly modern edge to them (well, you are playing the game on an iPad, after all). Enjoy 27 levels featuring a variety of environments on the planet of Eternia; defend Castle Grayskull from Skeletor and Beast Man; and collect secret powers.
Combat controls are fluid and gratifying to execute; you’re guaranteed to get a thrill each time He-Man wields his sword, slicing through bad guys and unleashing the full power of the universe on their bosses.
The more zombie games are released, the more I’m starting to appreciate those developers who put a unique twist on the concept. Here’s one such game. In Zombiewood, the undead have taken over Los Angeles, replacing the glitz and glamour of the Hollywood crowd with zombie hordes.
Which means two things: First, this situation presents the opportunity for a few lucky zombies to appear on the silver screen. Second, not everyone can be a star, so some of these zombies must still be dealt with!
Enjoy dual-stick shooter action and 20 different weapons as you take down the undead who are trying to get into Hollywood, plus 11 different movies zombies can star in, and 10 unique game modes. Go ahead, get in costume!
Here’s a charming game featuring a rough-and-tumble bunch of wide-eyed bots. Enjoy the challenge of collecting as many as you can, and then pitting them against each other in rousing battle bot competitions.
Of course, as any good battle bot builder will tell you, modifications are a necessary part of develepment. So make the most of detachable gizmo robot parts to customize your little champions and give them a better shot of taking down their opponents. It’s all in the name of building and expanding your intergalactic outpost, naturally (complete with space station).
The game is free, but some in-app purchases are presented as options (these can be disabled if you wish). Gizmonauts does require an Internet connection to play (3G or Wi-Fi).
Your name: Jack Griffin. Your job title: contract killer. And no one is better in your line of work than you are. The ultimate survivor, you’re a pro at sneaking up on your target and then taking him out.
Utilize long-range kill shots, close-range melee attacks, scopes and silencers — whatever you need to best get the job done, whether you’re tasked with eliminating a high-profile player or all enemies at street level. One thing’s for sure: You need to stay on the top of your game — watch out for sudden ambushes, hidden bombs and other perils.
Periodically, your assignments will earn you titles, badges and rewards, and you’ll have the opportunity to upgrade your weapons and gear, plus outfit your person with throwing knives, body armor, brass knuckles and more.
I absolutely love the look of this game. The graphics, which are heavy on silhouettes and solid colors, relate almost fable-like characters and environments. Appropriate, since the main character is a brave warrior on a legendary mission.
While the world is threatened by darkness, this warrior is ready to restore the life forces and return the stars to the sky. His ability to transform into a number of noble creatures — rhinoceros, eagle, dragon — aids him on his quest, as he spears enemies on his horn, soars over peril with his wings, and clears his path with his fiery breath.
As a player, the challenge comes in knowing exactly when to use each of the three animal forms to your advantage. Battle your way through five chapters in this unique and immersive story.
