This week’s roundup really does have something for everyone, including a futuristic adventure game; street racing combined with police evasion; a squadron of battle-ready aircraft at your command; gunfights in the wild wild west; and a retro-inspired puzzler.
If you’re a genre-hopping gamer like me, all five will spark your interest. Hit the jump to check them out.
Shardlands is a 3-D puzzle adventure game built around a visually beautiful and unusual environment. The main character, Dawn, is lost and trying to find her way home. To do so, she has to active an ancient machine with keys that are scattered around a fragmented world containing monsters, strange contraptions, puzzles and danger at every turn.
The soundtrack is captivating, gameplay is smooth and the 20 levels are appropriately challenging yet intriguing. You won’t want to give up until you’ve completed each and every objective.
Shardlands looks gorgeous on the latest iPad, as it comes complete with full support for Retina and widescreen displays, making the lighting throughout the game create some stunning visuals. If you have one of the early iPads, I wouldn’t bother downloading this one until you upgrade in order to get the most out of the experience.
In this rendition of Need for Speed you’re trying your best to evade police and prove to other street racers you’re the fastest thing on four wheels. Race cars like the SRT Viper GTS, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Hummer H1 Alpha and others — you’ve got three dozen to choose from.
Modify your car to increase its power and speed, and earn speed points to unlock more cars. Plus, you can drive however you want — touch or tilt, whichever shows off your driving skills the best. (You’ll love the no-brakes-allowed street racing, especially with the game’s realistic full-care damage.)
Race your friends and check out the Wanted List, where you can see which of your rivals is the “Most Wanted” across all the platforms.
Take control of your very own squadron of planes and command them to engage the enemy. By drawing paths with your finger in the gamplay area, you’re giving the planes their flight plans and sending them directly into battle.
Make sure your aircraft are as prepared as they can be by leveling them up, collecting valuable gear for upgrades, unlocking new battlefields, and adding planes to your arsenal.
The more you play, the better you’ll get. High scorers will earn medals of honor for the rookie, pro and veteran levels of each battlefield, and there are 100 wave survival levels you can unlock for added challenges. Three maps are free; unlocking more requires an in-app purchase.
We’re heading west. Atari has based this reincarnation on its classic 1976 game by the same name. In it, you’re a bounty hunter with something to prove by going from town to town and taking care of a wild collective of misfits, including corrupt sheriffs, banditos and grumpy miners.
There’s no shortage of weapons to choose from here (think buzz saws and Teslas that shoot lightning bolts), and you can reload just by giving your device a gentle shake. Plus there are add-ons and bonus ammo for each day you play.
Upgrade your weapons for greater power, accuracy and fire rate, and then see what works best in each of the gunfight locations, ranging from the High Sierra to Fort Beaver.
This puzzle game features a retro-inspired aesthetic and a unique concept. You’re racing the clock, trying to destroy as many blocks on the gameboard as you can. Tapping one will change its color and the color of every block around it.
Destroying the key power-up blocks on the gameboard will add seconds to your countdown clock and points to your score. Try to master all the different levels, including racing against the clock in 60SEC and going for the highest score in 50TAPS.
See how long you can keep playing in TAP4EVR, challenge yourself to increasingly tricky gameboards in LEVLD, and feel the pressure in MUSTMATCH.
