iPad Game Thursday: New Releases

“Eclectic” doesn’t even begin to describe these five games, which spotlight summer camp and bigfoot; the Dubai Autodrome; a boy named Manuganu who’s on the run; the bulls of Pamplona, Spain; and some very Dumb Ways to Die.

I hope you enjoy discovering what they all have — or don’t have — in common. Click “more” to start playing.

Dumb Ways to Die

Fans of the viral video will particularly enjoy this game, in which you must take care to protect private parts from all sorts of dangers, including piranhas, rattlesnakes, trains, fire, flying, toasters and others.

Basically, the concept was to create a game based on scenes from the video, which means you’ll love all the references and inside jokes. The uninitiated, however, will still enjoy tapping, swiping and tilting their way through all the minigames.

For example, save as many characters as you can by running as fast as possible, wiping vomit off the screen, swatting wasps, preventing a psycho killer from entering, carefully removing forks from toasters and completing other amusing tasks. New in the latest version is the opportunity to take the “Don’t Do Dumb Stuff Around Trains” pledge.

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery: Episode 1

This striking game centers on a little boy, Jacob Jones, with big curiosity. While spending his summer at Camp Eagle Feather, Jacob encounters a number of interesting characters, including talking animals, goofy hunters, odd campmates, and a very surprising new friend.

The game plays out more like a wonderfully animated short film, with 3-D graphics, smooth animation, and a very creative storyline. You get to solve challenging puzzles along the way that are really unlike anything I’ve seen before. Plus, make sure you’re always on the lookout for objects hidden throughout the forest and other environments in the game.

The imaginative plot was written by the very talented and BAFTA-nominated George Poles. If you’re looking for a story to immerse yourself in, this won’t disappoint.

Manuganu

Assume the role of the boy Manuganu in this 3-D sidescroller that has him running and jumping his way through or across all kinds of terrain, including jungles, forests, ice and caves.

In 30 levels you’ll get to dodge obstacles, slide down ropes and jump over ravines and moving hazards using just a few buttons and simple swipe controls. You can perform double-jumps, wall slides and rolls, plus hover or break blocks of ice or stone. A Halt feature allows you to avoid swinging rocks, hammers, flames and other dangers. You can even switch back and forth between running mode and climbing mode.

Collect coins and medallions as you go, and try running into alternate paths to earn three stars in every level.

Real Racing 3

The newly updated Real Racing 3 delivers a new track (the Dubai Autodrome, complete with six track layouts for day and twilight racing), new manufacturer (hello, Lexus), and some sweet new rides (Lexus IS-F, Lexus LFA, Dodge Charger RT, Dodge Charger SRT8), not to mention more than 50 new events.

Test your skills on an expanded 22-car grid in one of the above-mentioned cars, or choose from nearly four dozen other beauties by Porsche, Lamborghini, Dodge, Bugatti and Audi. And race on officially licensed tracks, such as Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone, Hockenheimring and others.

Competing in the more than 900 events like cup races, eliminations, endurance challenges and drag races is fun, but nothing beats lapping one of your friends using the Time Shifted Multiplayer technology built into the game. TSM makes it possible for you to race a friend even if he or she isn’t currently online.

Running With Friends

You’ve always wanted to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, yes? No? Well what if I told you there was a safer alternative? Running With Friends will have you giddily trying to remain one step ahead of the horned creatures as you frantically wind your way around the cobbled streets of this Spanish town.

Choose your character: You can run as a ninja, ballerina, zombie or other funny figure. Then, in addition to dodging unfriendly-looking bulls, cars, and other obstacles, you’ll also want to outrun your friends — challenge them to a run, or make new friends to run with. Jump off ramps and buildings, ride bucking bulls for whatever distance you can (and for awesome bonuses).

And even though Spain sounds nice, you’d better not stop to do any sightseeing, since the bulls are headed your way. Run!
