Apple’s alternative to Google Maps, included with iOS 6, has been disappointing to many users. From the little information errors and graphical glitches to the lack of public transportation within the app, the default mapping software is nothing to boast about. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, apologized for the many lacking functions and erroneous information, saying that the more people use it, the better it will get. Until then, what should users do?

The App Store now has a section dedicated to good Maps alternatives, though the apps in its page aren’t all as amazing as Google’s mapping system on Android. Since there’s more to look for, I ventured into the depths of the App Store and found a few appealing pieces of software. Ever since the release of the App Store, a market has clearly existed for “what’s around me” applications. One of the very first was Where To?, an application that proved to be incredibly popular on the original iPhone. We’ve come a long way since then, and this category of apps has plenty to offer!

Today I’m going to be taking a look at a popular free choice at present – AroundMe. AroundMe quickly identifies your position and allows you to choose the nearest anything in your nearby vicinity. It’s a nifty app, and we’ll take a closer look after the break!
