Keeping a journal is a great way to write introspectively and is just as important for some people as formal writing. The App Store holds a select number of journal or diary apps, but I stuck with Maxjournal.
Maxjournal is free and allows for creating multiple journals. Its interface is a good balance of style and function. It’s also pretty easy to use, which makes starting a journal less about the fluff and more about the content.
A notepad test: take a pen and a piece of paper or notepad and write a few words or your name. Easy, isn’t it? Now what about doing that on your iPad, but add the ability to carry with you many pens and paper types, preprepared perfect shapes, highlighter pens and a virtually unlimited reference book that you could cut and paste from (the Internet). Sound a little bit better than the pad and pencil? You’d like to think so.
Here’s the ultimate question: can you replace a notebook in college or your workplace with an iPad and some good software? Well, lets take a look at some of the best offerings out there and see how well they match or exceed your notepad test. (more…)
Since the start of 2013, I’ve been on the journaling bandwagon, and I’ve been on the lookout for the perfect journal app. I’m not of the feeling that one app is going to suit everyone, though, or even fulfill all my needs. With daily questions to encourage more thoughtful journaling and even more questions to download, I decided to give Roller Journal a go. Journaling has, to some, become a relic; an item of the past which is no longer relevant. With children of the Facebook age growing farther apart from textile books, writing a diary has become a lost art. People now prefer to use Facebook (or Twitter) as their journal of everything that takes place in their life. It’s understandable since you can share all of the activity there with your friends, but what about all those private things and thoughts you’ve had throughout the day? What, are you going to Tweet them or something? No, I have a better idea.
iPads are great for almost anything and, if you’re comfortable with typing on one, why not use it for journaling as well? Bloom Built’s Day One is by far the best solution to this. Our own Nathaniel Mott reviewed this app last November, giving it a 9/10 for outstanding design and the many handy features. Now, nearly a year later, the developer has added some great new key features like photos, geotagging, weather and Foursquare check-ins. If you are like me, then you love taking pictures. Pictures of your friends, pets, vacation spots and relatives are plastered all over your walls, lockers, desks, refrigerators and mirrors. And let’s not forget all of the pictures of you and your friends on FaceBook! Photos are a great way to capture memorable experiences in a flash. What’s more fun than taking pictures? Why sharing them, of course!
There are so many ways to share your visual experiences with the world. Some people prefer the physical route by making scrapbooks and decorating special paper with crazy designs and colors, while others prefer the digital route and posting directly to Facebook or Flickr. Apple has found a way to tie both of these directions together in their iPhoto for iOS app with a feature named Photo Journaling. (more…)
