I, like many adults, used to collect comics. I owned dozens of long boxes, filled to the brim with various copies of X-Men, Spider-Man and Detective. But I eventually traded comic books for cars, and shortly thereafter my collection went away, sold to a man for pennies on the dollar.
Three years ago, I started collecting again. But I didn’t end up in a dusty comic book shop that smelled of vanilla and shame, but instead from the comfort of my living room using the many popular iPad apps built by Comixology. And recently, the game changed again with Marvel Unlimited. But the shape of the online comic book landscape still isn’t that bright. How so? Let’s find out. (more…)
There were a ton of big movies this summer, and although The Dark Knight Rises was a pretty big deal, let’s face it: The Avengers was the star of the season. Featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor and The Incredible Hulk, it was quite the event, for sure.
But the fun didn’t stop this summer, because Marvel has years of Avengers-related stories to tell over the next few years. To keep the hype going, they recently released Avengers Initiative for the iPhone and iPad (which doesn’t include the first-gen iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch), and it’s the first in a series. When I was a kid, I used to take two city buses to reach the local comic book store, then another and then I’d walk a mile or so to my parent’s office so I could get a ride home. Eventually, I moved on to another hobby and sold my collection, but I didn’t really want to — they were just taking up too much space.
Today, there are tons of great comic apps on the iPad, and most of them are built by Comixology. The big two are really the ones everyone talks about: Marvel and DC Comics.
