About a year ago I wrote an article for iPad AppStorm entitled, “What the new Microsoft Surface means for the iPad”. It got lots of comments, many of which called me biased towards Apple and the iPad. Maybe I was slightly biased, but as an iPad and iPhone owner writing on an iPad website that was to be expected. Today I revisit this old topic as news of Microsoft slashing the price of the Surface RT (the lower end model) is released upon the world. In this article I’ll again be looking at the Surface and the iPad, what they mean for each other and whether the Surface has proved a true contender to the iPad on a number of levels.

The iPad currently has three major social networking apps available on it: Facebook, Twitter and Google+, the last of which is rarely used. Most people use Facebook so they use that app, but there are some who still enjoy Twitter’s much declined (it now looks like a large version of the iPhone edition) official app. Then there are the rare few who prefer Google’s solution to online social networking.

But one service has not been mentioned because it was originally exclusive to the iPhone. This micro social network, as some would call it, is Path. It’s been around since March 2011 and, while it received a lot of praise at first, was recently criticized for an issue found in many iOS apps (accessing contacts without the user’s approval). An independent developer released a Mac app named Journey that allowed users to browse their Path news feeds, but other than that, an iPad app has been needed for some time. Twitter is a very popular social network and up until lately, users have been able to access it using a variety of third-party clients. A month or so back, however, Twitter decided it was time to restrict the access that third-party apps have, meaning that new users and even some old ones will be dropped from certain apps. This was a disappointing move by Twitter. It could make everything better with a good update to its official apps, and that’s just what it did on September 18th. Starting with the iPad and iPhone apps, Twitter has brought an overhaul in design and functionality. The tablet app is back on top again, it seems. But is it really worth your time or should you stay loyal to your favorite third-party app? (more…)

The thought of a smaller iPad strikes fear into the hearts of many, with some going so far as to call the idea a large smartphone. True, there’s a lot of speculation surrounding the tablet and many reports have claimed that it will be unveiled next month during a special Apple event at which the next iPhone will also be either released or previewed.

There’s so very much information to gather about this rumored device that one could spend days looking for it all. Even the good John Gruber wrote an in-depth article exploring the many possibilities of a smaller iPad. I, however, have decided to jot down my own thoughts on the idea along with some useful information for all of you wondering what such a device would be like. (more…)

Throughout history, as long as there have been market leaders there have been competitors, that’s just how it goes – Coca Cola has Pepsi, Ferrari has Lamborghini, and Apple has Microsoft and Google. With regard to the tablet market the recently announced Microsoft Surface tablets (Surface and Surface Pro) could be the first truely serious contenders from Microsoft who are looking for a slice of the extremely lucrative market practically created by Apple’s ever-dominant iPad.

So what does the new Microsoft Surface announcement mean for the iPad?

Amazon has finally announced their long-awaited entry into the tablet market. Rumors have been circling for months now, including a well-documented look into the device that MG Siegler got when he actually held the then-unannounced device.

The device is called the Kindle Fire, and it’s going to enter the market with a bang. How does it stack up to the iPad, though? Let’s discuss.
