Study Up: 15 Test Prep Applications for the iPad

The iPad is a fantastic tool for the world of education. I have used mine to track assignments, take notes, record lectures, read and annotate textbooks, study for exams, do research and much more. Now that I have graduated, however, it is time to put my iPad to new use as I look into graduate school – studying for the GRE.

As I began my search for apps to utilize for this purpose, I began to wonder what kind of apps existed for all the various standardized tests that we might encounter. This round-up contains some of my findings – a list of some apps designed for specific tests as well as some apps for more general preparation. Read on to learn about some of the best apps that I found.

Test-Based Applications

Bench Prep

The first application on the list is Bench Prep. This app is free to download and is supported by pricey but worthwhile in-app purchases. The application covers a huge number of tests, including the GRE, LSAT, ACT, BAR Exam, PRAXIS and too many more to name here. While the courses are a bit pricey, purchases are universally available on your iPad, iPhone and computer. Each course includes practice questions, tests, flashcards and more as well as the ability to do reviews and track your progress.

ACT Math Connect

Next up is another app by the makers of Bench Prep, the ACT Math Connect application. This app is somewhat comparable to the Bench Prep courses but at a much more affordable price. It contains diagnostic tests, review materials, questions from the test as well as the ability to sync with the desktop application and track your scores. The ACT Math Connect app is just one of a great series of Connect applications by Watermelon Express. They also offer apps for the GRE, LSAT, GMAT and more. If you are looking for a pretty decent collection of test materials at a fairly affordable price, this series is excellent.

SAT Vocabulary for Dummies

The vocabulary section of the SAT is notoriously hard. It requires a lot of additional studying, which is why the App Store is chock full of SAT vocab applications. SAT Vocabulary Practice For Dummies is one of the best ones out there. The application has flashcards, tests, a dictionary and more. In fact, the app even provides you with ways to help boost your memory and learning capabilities for the big test. Definitely a good app to look into if you need to brush up on your vocabulary.

SAT Score Quest

Another great SAT prep app comes directly from the Princeton Review. SAT Score Quest provides you with an assessment test to take in order to find out your weakest areas for the SAT. Use the included practice questions to brush up on your weak areas once you know what they are. There are also 15 SAT Core Concept lessons included to help you master some of the top SAT strategies.

AP Exam Prep – 5 Steps to a 5

Next up is another app great for those still in high school. If you are preparing for an AP exam, check out AP Exam Prep – 5 Steps to a 5. This application includes 25 questions for each specific exam within the app for free. If you need more assistance with a particular subject, you can pay to unlock an additional 450 – 500 questions for the subject. Once you’ve unlocked, you can easily study random questions, target a weakness by studying by category or create a quiz to study the questions you struggle with. The app includes tests in the sciences, English, history and more, and the library is always growing.

Now that we’ve made it out of high school, it’s time to look into some apps for graduate examinations. First up is one of my most used apps, GRE +. This application is made by Arcadia Prep and utilizes the Arcadia GRE course. There are sets for math, verbal and more. Sets include practice questions, tests, a workspace to solve problems, a discussion forum to talk about problems and answer questions and more. The app is incredibly full-featured and provides an excellent way to brush up on the various knowledge areas needed for the GRE.

The MCAT is, of course, a very well-known standardized exam. Potential students of medicine should definitely consider a test-prep app like MCAT by Sprockit, Inc. This application features over 2,000 flashcards in all of the major test topic areas. Topics featured in the application include organic and general chemistry, biology, physics, skeletal system, embryology, nervous system and much more. The application is compatible with other iOS devices, allowing your data to sync across devices.

The LSAT is another well-known examination, and any good student needs an app. For one of the best, try the LSAT* application. Although this application is one of the pricier applications, this application includes 64 official LSAT practice tests available for in-app purchase, 232 pre-loaded questions, questions with explanations from the 99th percentile Manhattan LSAT tutors, flashcards and much more, compatible with any iOS device. The intuitive interface as well as tools included for use with supplementary paper materials make LSAT* a fantastic application for LSAT preparation.

The Official Guide for GMAT® Review – 12th Edition

Last but not least, if you are preparing for the GMAT, then consider purchasing the Official Guide for GMAT Review – 12th Edition. This application comes from the creators of the GMAT exam and includes options to answer practice questions, register to take the exam, compare yourself to other users via Game Center integration and even add additional questions via in-app purchases. This application is definitely a worthwhile investment for anyone needing a general overview of the GMAT.

General Preparation Applications

Algebra Touch

While applications for the specific test you are taking are definitely helpful, sometimes a general review of a certain subject is more in order. Math is definitely one of the areas we often need to brush up on, so consider an application like Algebra Touch for a great review of algebra. Algebra Touch utilizes unique iOS features to teach algebra in a whole new way. Algebra Touch is one of the best ways to brush up on algebra, but you can certainly find a great math application for any area you need to review.

If you cannot use a calculator or simply need brush up on speed-solving skills for mathematical problems on your upcoming exam, then Mathemagics is certainly an interesting application to download. This application aims to teach you a variety of mental math tricks to help you quickly multiply, divide and square numbers. There are even tricks for adding and subtracting large numbers. This is definitely a great way to ensure you can avoid or abandon the calculator all together for whatever exam you’re working on.

Khan Academy

Next up is one of my favorite educational apps, Khan Academy. The Khan Academy application offers an all video education system with over 2,700 videos covering subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, many math subjects, civics, finance, art history and much more. In the application you can watch or download videos, sync activity to your Khan Academy membership and eventually you will be able to complete exercises that go with the videos. This app is great for brushing up on a variety of math and science subject areas.

Exam Support With Andrew Johnson

Lastly, we have an application great for anyone preparing for a big test. Exam Support with Andrew Johnson helps you to cope with the nerves before an exam. The application provides guided meditation sessions to help you to improve focus or concentration, overcome anxiety and much more. This is definitely a great way to learn to relax when you need it the most.
