iPad Game Thursday: New Releases

Today’s roundup of games proffers quite a bit of variety, which means this is how you’ll be spending your weekend: taking down some zombies (clearing the zombie problem doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon); leading an army of fieldrunners in defense of your nation; kicking field goals like an NFL pro; and putting on the most unusual golf course you’ll ever see.

Oh yeah, you’ll also be helping a bunch of critters called Linkies rid their world of toxic waste. (No, it’s not as dry as it sounds, and yes, it’s totally addictive.) Hit the jump to take a look.

Dead Trigger

Here’s another game looking to capitalize on the zombie craze — but does it deliver? Decidedly so. The high-quality graphics and ragdoll effects are three-dimensional, brilliantly gory and include realistic motion capture (well, relatively speaking — it’s still a game about zombies, after all).

You’ve got dozens of different weapons and gadgets, nine different environments to run around in, plus three arenas specifically for survival mode. The more kills you make, the faster your character levels up, the more money and items you can earn.

To its credit, the game lets you choose between following the storyline the developers have created, or just completing random missions; this makes everyone happy, including those who like their games more plot-focused, and those who are in it mostly for the carnage.

Fieldrunners 2 HD

Some games are all about the offense, but this one is all about the defense. The fieldrunners are responsible for defending their world from what’s sure to be a devastating invasion, and they’ve got a whole lot of weapon options for how to get the job done.

But it’s not that easy. Fieldrunners weaves puzzle components into the elements of action and combat. So you’re going to need to use some strategy in where you lay your paths for the enemy, the order in which you call in your airstrikes, detonate your explosives and implement other maneuvers. After you think you’ve mastered said skills, put yourself to the test in the puzzle, sudden death or time trial levels.

At $7.99, this game is on the steeper side compared to many other high-quality games in the App Store. But the graphics are phenomenally sleek … and did I mention there’s a tower that launches beehives?

Now here’s a cute and addictive game that you’ll need to clear some time in your day for. Linkies is a physics-based puzzle game with a simple yet challenging premise, colorful characters and graphics, and 90 levels and five “chapters.”

The main characters (those would be the Linkies), are trying to clean up the toxic waste that has been spewed into their world by an old rusty robot. Your job is to match three of a kind to eliminate the trash and keep the one-eyed Linkies happy.

This game reminds me of LINE Birzzle and others like it which have become the Tetris for the new generations of players. We’ve got bright colors, innovative graphics, character involvement, a basic storyline, fast-paced action and oh yes, a blitz mode and the ability to challenge friends via Facebook.

NFL Kicker 13

You really don’t have to be a football fanatic to enjoy this game (although it helps) in which you are an NFL kicker a la Flick Golf, Flick Soccer and NFL Flick Quarterback. You get to choose your team, then unlock new uniforms and new equipment as you progress.

The developers describe the gameplay as “easy to learn but hard to master.” Truth. But that’s what makes it addictive to play, since each kick has you telling yourself “just one more!” After you get the hang of things, you can compete against your Facebook friends to see who’s the better kicker.

Some fun bonus features include the ability to upgrade your stadium, customize your jersey with your name and number, plus view a live NFL news feed ticker in-app.

The aptly named Wonderputt is a visual treat, and I guarantee you haven’t seen anything quite like this. The game is a highly creative round of adventure golf, involving everything from cows and ski slopes to torpedoes and alien abductions.

Of course, this means the game’s environment is resembles a highly complicated, very Rube Goldberg-esque contraption. Which in turn means the real joy is in watching it in action for all 18 holes.

Wonderputt has been masterfully enhanced for retina display and includes its own unique soundtrack. My only complaint, and I think it will be yours too, is that there should be more courses so the fun can last for longer!
