iPad Game Thursday: New Releases

This week’s roundup of games brings you a runner game with futuristic graphics, a combat game with a royal rebel for a hero, an alien that’s simply run out of fuel, a sequel (of sorts) to Angry Birds, and a completely addictive puzzler involving a popular pastime — doodling.

Hit the jump and we’ll take a look.

Amazing Runner

This runner game emphasizes speed and imaginatively designed tracks. It will have you dashing across futuristic terrain, including on sideways roadways, around spirals, through tunnels and more.

Of course, obstacles up the challenge factor, demanding that you dodge them or slash them out of your way; certain gaps in the track will also require you to jump at just the right moment.

This means there are only a few commands to juggle while running. For example, tap to bust your way through something in your way; swipe upward to make your character jump (you’ll have to work on mastering the circular movement required to stick the spirals — that’s a whole other thing); and tilt your iPad to the left and right to collect coins.

Royal Revolt

You’re a price who was sent away to learn magic at Bogsmarts boarding school, and while you were away your father, the king, died. Now you’ve returned to your land only to find it overrun by enemy troops.

In every level it’s your job to lead your troops to the enemy castle, to ultimately destroy it and any retaliation you encounter along the way. You use your moral points to spawn troops on the fly, using them to break down barriers, defeat enemies and take down the castle.

Spells for super powers and troop upgrades add some extra fun to the game. The cartoon graphics are bright and attractive. And the little details from the developers are what separate this game from the crowd. For example, the clean layout, the informative map, the indicator that tells you when your newly spawned troops will arrive … These guys have thought of everything.
